too obvious?

If nothing else, the styles of Ulysses add variety. Six hundred pages inside the mind of Blephen and Stoom might drag. The styles may just be a rhetorical technique; there's even a name for it: "varietas." The styles definitely have a "leavening" effect, not in making the book easier to read, but in making it more lively, varied.
