silence, exile, cunning

Maybe content, narrator, and style are traps for the author to fall into. Maybe what Joyce is doing in Ulysses is evading these traps by having no content, using random Homeric narrators, and using “found” styles. The result: no author to be found anywhere; aesthetic stasis.

Schiller proclaims that, in a beautiful poem, "the content should do nothing, the form everything...the real artistic secret of the master consists in his annihilating the material by means of the form."

If you made a movie of Aeolus, you could use silent-movie onscreen intertitles for the headlines. They would interrupt the action the way the headlines interrupt our reading.
